Last month, I was watching a Rocky movie rerun on the movie channel. I'm not sure why I like that movie so much, maybe because it is about the individual against the odds, battling it out through all that adversity and realizing victory in the end. It seems to me that much of life is like that. And that all those quotes we grew up with such as; never give up - well, they all seem to be part of the theme of that movie. I notice these days I don't see a whole lot of movies about individuals, at least not to that degree.
There seems to be a trend in our society against the individual, and perhaps it has to do with our move towards socialism. Where people are asked to give of themselves, and join a greater cause bigger than themselves, and in the end they seem to lose themselves in the process. That's too bad really, but I imagine there will be another movie someday in the future that will bring everyone back into reality, have them look in their own mirrors so we don't end up like 1984, Gattaca, or the Borg.
Even the movies where the main characters make it against the odds, and overcome adversity, I've noted that usually it is now a small team of people rather than the individual or the main character doing it by themselves? That's almost like saying they wouldn't be able to without help. It might even subconsciously make people believe that they need help to do something, that you can't do anything in life if you don't have lots of friends, and a team behind you.
In many regards this could be said to be social conditioning, but I do believe that Hollywood is involved in an art form which mimics society, and yes, it too leads society sometimes. In this case I would say it is a self-fulfilling prophecy and Hollywood is just doing what everyone is thinking because everyone has been brainwashed into thinking in a "groupthink" format.
Now then, I will not tell you that that is good or bad, personally as someone who enjoys being an individual, I am somewhat troubled by all of this, but it's not going to change who I am, even though it is changing everyone around me. Still, I think it's time for a young filmmaker to bring us another epic Rocky type movie. The time is overdue, and our society needs one right about now.
That's just an observation from outside the box looking in, and you my friend can do with this information anything you want. You can disregard these thoughts, even disregard yourself, you can deny yourself the opportunity of looking in your own mirror and asking these questions, or you can make a movie which will blow out the box office, it's your choice. Please consider all this and think on it.
